Meet Helen

EMDR Specialist

Helen

A little bit about me …..

I am a psychotherapist and EMDR practitioner, working with both adults and young people in private practice and in schools.

I am passionate about helping my clients move forward in their lives so they are living to their full potential.

Having experienced traumatic loss and both big and little T traumas in my own life, I am a firm believer in the power of seeking help in times of need.

I am a mum to two boys, love being in nature, walking my dog and swimming outdoors.

What is your education and training?

I am a qualified counsellor and an Accredited Member of the BACP.  I am a member of EMDR UK, and trained with the EMDR Academy.

Do you work with children under 18?

For EMDR I work with age 18 upwards, I do see under 18’s for counselling however.

How do I know if you and the therapy are right for me? How will we assess my progress?

I offer a free 20 minute call to see if I feel the right fit, and after our first session we agree a next session if it feels right to continue – there is no obligation, it has to feel right for you.

We will work together to review how are sessions are going and ensure that you are getting what you need from them.

How long is each session and how often? How much does it cost?

Each session is for 55 minutes and it’s £75 per session.  Frequency is agreed when we meet and longer sessions can be agreed where it feels right.

Is therapy online or in person?

Therapy can be online via zoom, or face to face, and I am based in Beaconsfield Old Town.

What can I expect in my first session?

We will look at understanding what has brought you to seek EMDR therapy, what your goals are and what you have been experiencing symptom wise, and we will work together to understand what you would like to work on.  We will also taka a history to understand what has happened in the past.

What if I have to cancel?

I ask for payment when the session is booked and have a 48 hour cancellation policy, all cancellations prior to 48 hours will be refunded.

What is EMDR and how does it work?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation Re-processing. It is a specialised technique which can include hand tapping and eye movements, these activate the brain in a certain way to help people recover from traumatic experiences, whether that be a single incident trauma or more complex long term trauma.  We work with clients whose nervous system was overwhelmed by an event and has become stuck in that moment, resulting in the body and mind being triggered unhelpfully in the present by fragments of memory from the past.

EMDR therapy works by processing the trauma with both sides of the brain stimulated. The bilateral movements help a memory become unstuck within the brain and allow our natural neural networks to reconnect from one side of the brain to the other.

What can EMDR help with?

EMDR can help with past traumas or phobias or events that seem to have got ‘stuck’ and are causing problems today e.g. PTSD, physical responses, fears, and phobias.  Essentially allowing information which we have available to us in one network of our brain which has been unable to link up with the stored fragmented memory from the past, which is then causing problems in the present.

We like to think of it as putting a jigsaw together. Normal memories are stored in the left hand side of the brain, which has access to language and logic to create a whole picture. In trauma, that picture can be broken up into pieces, like breaking up a jigsaw and is often represented by certain sounds and smells and sights, but not the whole picture and often no language to express it. EMDR helps move those fragments from the right to the left-hand side of the brain, where they are whole, have a beginning a middle and an end and allow us to use language to express them.

We are a fully insured, trusted and accredited professional therapists.
